Overview

As a contractor, you’re responsible for your own taxes. Toku helps by collecting required tax information and providing documentation for your records.

Documents You Provide

Depending on your location, you may need to provide:

Documents You Receive

Toku provides:
  • Payment summaries — Record of all payments received
  • 1099 (US) — Annual tax form if you received $600+ from a US client
  • Invoice history — Complete record of your invoices

Providing Tax Information

Navigate to Tax Info

Go to Settings > Tax Information

Select your country

Choose your country of tax residence

Complete required forms

Fill out the appropriate tax form (W-9, W-8BEN, etc.)

Enter tax ID

Provide your tax identification number

Sign electronically

Sign the form to certify the information

For US Contractors

W-9 Form

If you’re a US person (citizen, resident, or entity), complete a W-9 with:
  • Legal name
  • Business name (if applicable)
  • Tax classification
  • Social Security Number or EIN
  • Address

1099-NEC

If you receive $600 or more from a US client in a calendar year, you’ll receive a 1099-NEC form by January 31 of the following year.

For Non-US Contractors

W-8BEN / W-8BEN-E

If you’re a non-US person working with a US company:
  • Certifies your foreign status
  • May reduce or eliminate US tax withholding
  • Requires country of residence and foreign tax ID

Withholding

Some payments to non-US contractors may be subject to US withholding (typically 30%, reduced by tax treaties).

Tax Withholding

In some cases, taxes may be withheld from your payments:
  • Check your payment details for any withholding
  • Withheld amounts are remitted to tax authorities
  • You receive documentation of amounts withheld

Keep records of:
  • All invoices submitted
  • All payments received
  • Tax documents (W-9, 1099, etc.)
  • Business expenses related to your contractor work

As a contractor, you may need to make estimated tax payments throughout the year. Check with a tax professional about your obligations.
